Gliding

Trial Flights at the Borders Gliding Club (www.bordersgliding.co.uk) are fantastic. Gliding silently through the air is one of the best ways of seeing the Cheviot Hills – the thermals and free airspace mean that members regularly climb beyond 20,000 feet!

Trial flights are a lot less scary (you will not need oxygen for a start) but no less exciting. They can be taken on a Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting. If you telephone the club in advance on 01668 216284 on Friday, Saturday or Sunday they will do their best to arrange to fly you at a convenient time on the day you want.

Flights are dependent on the weather so it is always a good idea to telephone before setting off on the day. The club is based at Milfield airfield, between Wooler and Coldstream on the A697 (keep going straight through Rothbury, past Pauperhaugh and follow the A697 north – a left turn at the Angler’s Arms).

Vintage Aircraft Flights

Just 15 miles from Burnfoot is Eshott Airfield (www.eshottairfield.com), a former Royal Air Force Spitfire training base in the heart of Northumberland. They offer flight experiences ideal for a budding pilot, someone who craves an adventure, an aviation enthusiast or just someone who loves the scenery of Northumberland.

They have an incredibly unique fleet of aircraft ranging from fixed wing microlights to vintage military training aircraft and you can fly as a passenger in any of them 7 days a week. On every flight you’ll get to see the stunning coastline, castles and scenery that this wonderful county has to offer.

If you have something in Northumberland you’d really like to see, why not give them a call on 01670 787881 and they’ll see if it’s something they can fly to during your vintage aircraft flying experience!
